This is my current favorite character excavation book! A working book. I even made my own worksheets so I could drill down to the core of my characters quickly. Very highly recommended.
You will probably see a pattern when You look at these books. I tend to zero in on the books that help me bring my A-game in emotion.  Also very highly recommended.
#1 favorite reference book.

A great set of books for character excavation.

Film School in a book. Storytelling instruction. Excellent excellent reference.

Great book for easy, step-by-step plotting. Super great. I use it in combination with Story Equation, and it tickles me down to my plotter nougat.

Awesome reference for learning to effectively employ and understand body language.

How do you want to hurt your characters? How deadly is it? How long will it take them to die? This book will give you ideas grounded in medical fact.
These last two books are not about craft, they're about what to do when writing gets hard. When you've pushed yourself too hard, and it's starting to add up. I hope you never need them, but they are wonderful resources to have.
